New Zealand's largest city has declared a state of emergency after heavy rains triggered widespread flooding and evacuations. Downpours in Auckland on Friday relocated homes, caused traffic jams and cut power to homes and businesses.

The city is said to have received 75% of its usual summer rainfall in just 15 hours. As the weather pummels the area, a street in Henderson, has been completely submerged by flooding.

Residents have water up to their waist and needing to evacuate their homes which are damaged. Cars have also been filmed bobbing in floodwaters. The flooding also disrupted travel to and from Auckland Airport. Domestic and international flights have now been grounded until at least midday on Saturday.

Many roads are closed in the region due to flooding and slips, making it extremely dangerous to be on the roads. Local authorities continued to urge people to stay home and not drive unless absolutely necessary. The agency advised residents in flood-prone areas to prepare to evacuate and opened an evacuation centre in west Auckland.

Video on social media showed firefighters, police and defence force staff rescuing stranded people from flooded homes using ropes and rescue boats. Motorists are being advised to stay off the roads in the Auckland region if possible and not to drive through floodwaters.

The nation's weather forecaster said while heavy rain had eased, another period of downpours was possible on Sunday.
