A major fire broke out at the Parika Marketing Centre around 3:15 pm on Friday and the vendors suffered millions of dollars in losses. They recalled hearing loud, continuous explosions and saw fire in one of the stalls. Some of them tried to save some of their commodities but before they knew it, the fire was spreading rapidly and the entire building was engulfed. They had to leave everything behind and run to save their lives. The market was undergoing an upgrade and contractors were welding on the roof of the steel structure. The spark from the welding dropped into one of the stalls which apparently had firecrackers and it quickly ignited and started to spread out of control. Four fire tenders showed up but the water finished quickly and they had to source more from river. Minister of Home Affairs, Robeson Benn, Minister within the Ministry of Public Works, Deodat Indar and the Region 3 chairman were there assisting and comforting the vendors.
