Targoviste is the municipality of residence of Dambovita County, Muntenia, Romania. It represents the main economic, cultural, political and administrative center of Dambovita County. Together with it it is part of the South-Muntenia development region. It is located in the south central part of Romania and is crossed by the parallel 44° 55' 27" N and the meridian 25° 27' 24" E, being positioned at the crossing between the Romanian Plain and the hills of the Subcarpathians that continue towards the Bucegi Mountains.

Targoviste is located at a distance of 80 km from Bucharest, the capital of Romania.

Targoviste in 2021 has approximately 80,000 residents and was the 27th largest city in Romania by population.

Royal residence and capital between 1396 and 1714, the city held for about three centuries the status of the most important economic, political-military and cultural-artistic center of the region, Targoviste being the seat of Wallachia.
