Identifying a shellac finish with a paint scraper...

If you are using a scraper to remove finish from a substrate (Furniture or other wood item) it has a yellow or amber appearance. The texture is brittle and appears almost crystalline.

Shellac finishes has been used for thousands of years. It is a natural finish created from the female lac bug 🐛.

To confirm it is shellac use denatured alcohol (methylated spirits) and coarse steel wool. The denatured alcohol will soften the shellac finish, and the steel wool can be used to collect and remove the softened shellac.
