Hurricane Ian strengthened to a major hurricane overnight Monday into Tuesday and made landfall over western Cuba around 4:30 a.m., the National Hurricane Center said.
Hurricane and storm surge warnings are in effect for Tampa Bay ahead of increasingly likely impacts from Hurricane Ian, according to the NHC.
Significant impacts are anticipated — including major storm surge, damaging winds and flooding rainfall.
As of the 8 a.m. advisory, Hurricane Ian was located about 10 miles north-northeast of the city of Pinar Del Rio, Cuba, with sustained winds of 125 mph. Ian's movement is north at 12 mph.
