Global National: Aug. 19, 2022 | Veteran felt “pressured” to consider medically-assisted death

Disturbing new details have emerged about a controversial call between a Canadian veteran and a worker at Veterans Affairs Canada. Global News has spoken directly with the veteran, who says he felt “pressured” to consider medically-assisted death as he tried to get treatment for post-traumatic stress. Mercedes Stephenson has the latest.

Canadian airports and airlines have been plagued by delays. It’s been a frustrating few months for many Canadian travellers and on Friday, Transport Minister Omar Alghabra blamed the problems on the COVID-19 pandemic. As Tom Vernon explains, the opposition says the federal government should shoulder much of the blame.

An Ottawa-based group with suspected ties to the so-called “Freedom Convoy” says it’s been threatened with eviction and is ready to take its cause to court in an attempt to set up headquarters in the Canadian capital. As Mike Drolet reports, the attempted eviction and another confrontation in Peterborough, Ont., have thrust alt-right and conspiracy groups back into the spotlight.

Rhetoric at Ukraine’s largest nuclear power plant continues to ramp up. Ukraine claims Russia wants to disconnect the Zaporizhzhia plant from its electricity grid, while Russian President Vladimir Putin warns of a large-scale catastrophe if shelling continues in the region. As Redmond Shannon reports, the international community is attempting to intervene to avoid a major nuclear accident.

More than 900 soldiers were killed in the raid of Dieppe, France during the Second World War. Only a small number of the Canadian veterans who survived are still alive. And as Eric Sorensen reports, one of those soldiers made the trip back to Dieppe to mark the 80th anniversary.
