Shoebill Stork

Deep inside the remote swamps of Africa lives a bird so weird that it doesn't even look like it's real. The African Shoebill is a bird that was originally discovered by the ancient Egyptians. The African shoebill looks more like an animatronic than a real bird. In fact, if you told us that this was someone cosplaying inside a poorly-made bird suit we'd definitely believe you! The Shoebill is an introverted bird. Individuals avoid each other until breeding season. It is common for the birds to maintain a distance of at least 20 meters between each other.

And if they're treating each other like this, we can't even begin to wonder how they'd treat humans. Almost as if to demonstrate their antisocial nature, just one chick born to a pair makes it to adulthood. And the process of picking which chick gets to survive is particularly gruesome. The mother leaves the nest and lets the stronger chick have its way with its sibling. Once the weaker chick is defeated, the mother usually kicks it out of the nest, or worse, eats it! It’s incredibly difficult to get near wild shoebills which is why most knowledge we have of these birds comes from ones kept in captivity.

Purple Frog

Purple frogs are one of only two species in the family Nasikabatrachus which solely exist in the western regions of India. Although their habitat is extremely restricted, it's not the only reason why it took researchers so long to find them.

These frogs live underground for the majority of their lives and only come to the surface for two weeks each year to reproduce. They can survive on a diet made up of food available underground, which mostly means termites for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, so they don't even need to come up for food.
