Meghalaya: Olympic association asked to ensure better facilities for athletes

Earlier on Monday, sordid pictures of the sleeping area, toilets and bath areas of the athletes who were camping at the JN Stadium here were doing the rounds following which the minister intervened.

The Sports and Youth Affairs department has earmarked over Rs 2.2 crore for the Meghalaya Games, of which Rs 1.2 crore have been released to the MSOA for the smooth conduct of the Games.

Meanwhile, after the images of unhygienic clogged toilets, leaked ceilings and lack of other basic amenities went viral, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma visited Jawaharlal Nehru Sports Complex at Polo grounds in Shillong late Sunday evening to assess the facilities being provided to the athletes.

During his visit, Sangma expressed disappointment at the Games organisers for providing poor accommodation facilities to the athletes. The Chief Minister instructed the organisers to provide better accommodation without any delay.
