What is a bite plate for?
A bite plate is a small, acrylic appliance with metal clasps that clip onto the inside of the top teeth. In general, the bite plate is used at the beginning of treatment to help correct a "deep bite" (when the upper teeth overlap the lower teeth too much).

Is a bite plate necessary?
The fixed bite plate is a very important part of your orthodontic treatment, if needed. It is cemented to your teeth to protect your lower braces and reduce the depth of your bite. This appliance will allow your back teeth to grow while it holds your front teeth.

How long do bite plates stay on?
As with any orthodontic appliance, you should brush all parts of your bite plate as well as your teeth. Depending on the amount of correction needed, the bite plate may be worn for 3 to 6 months. Make sure to bring it to every appointment.

Does bite plate hurt?
When you start wearing your bite plate, your teeth and gums may get sore or tender. This is normal and expected. Soreness of the teeth should go away within one week – if you wear your bite plate faithfully. If you take it out every time your teeth get tender, you will never get used to it.
